A fiber bronchoscope is a kind of endoscopic equipment used for visual examinations of bronchi and trachea which also allows conducting biopsy procedures. The device is used to examine the tracheobronchial tree mucous condition without resorting to surgical intervention. The device provides a possibility to examine the vascular pattern, mucosa relief and configuration in detail.
The device consists of a flexible tube with an instrumental channel and a light conductor (optical fiber) inside, an eyepiece, tube bend control knobs, optical system, endotherapeutic instruments, and a connected light source.
Due to fiberoptic cable utilization, light loss is 2.5 times lower than in equipment fitted with conventional lenses.
Modern fiberoptic bronchoscopes are equipped with photo and video cameras which allow recording detailed examinations and streaming video and images to the monitor screen. The device can take both pictures and video recordings and save them to a computer hard drive.
Inflammatory processes, suspected neoplasm, disseminated processes, pneumonia, trachea stenosis, abscesses, foreign objects extraction, tracheobronchial tree examinations, thermal burns, congenital conditions, prolonged coughs, and hemoptysis are just a few of the reasons why patients are prescribed bronchoscopy.
A fiber bronchoscope is a universal instrument for diagnostic, interventional and therapeutic procedures. Total anesthesia is not necessary to use, and any discomfort is reduced to a minimum.
Unlike standard optic endoscopes, fiber bronchoscopes allow deeper penetration into the tracheobronchial tree. The device provides a possibility to examine the quaternary and quinary subsegmental bronchi in detail, what was previously impossible. The device allows conducting a biopsy right during visual examination and flexible tube compact dimensions with miniature surgical forceps allow easy maneuvering in the bronchial tree. Aspiration is also performed through the instrumental channel.
