Active therapy (formerly known as alternating pressure; pressure relieving surfaces) describes the mode of action where the cells of an air-filled mattress alternately inflate and deflate to periodically redistribute pressure away from vulnerable areas of the body which are prone to pressure ulceration.

This can reduce the risk of pressure ulcer development in patients with reduced levels of mobility, by redistributing pressure for the prevention and treatment of tissue breakdown, maximising patient safety and comfort, and reducing unnecessary cost.
