Diversity of surgical lasers: choosing the right equipment

Laser surgery replaces traditional one slowly but surely. This is a safer method of performing operations, which improves the healing of damaged tissues and recovery of patients. Doctors use powerful devices, working in pulse or continuous modes.

Types of surgical lasers

Neodymium and carbon dioxide models are the most needed in the OR. There also exists a separate type of high-energy modifications, which have found application in narrow branches of medicine. For example, excimer lasers are used in ophthalmology, whereas KTP-lasers, ruby lasers, copper vapor lasers, dye laser and alexandrite laser are widely used in cosmetology.

CO2 lasers

CO2 laser is widely used device, which can be used  in a wide spectrum of surgeries in the following branches:

  • general surgery;
  • gynecology;
  • dermatology;
  • otorhinolaryngology;
  • cosmetic and plastic surgery.

The main disadvantage of equipment is its process continuity. The efficiency of tissue dissection depends largely on high peak power of the laser.
Neodymium laser
Preferred spheres of use:

  • oncological tumors;
  • deep coagulation and coagulation of large tissue volume in urology and gynecology;
  • internal bleeding during open and closed endoscopic surgeries.

The disadvantage of this device is that its radiation is dangerous. It is very harmful to sight, even when the radiation doses are low and diffused. In order to minimize risks for patients and medical staff, we recommend considering neodymium lasers with special non-linear KTP crystals.

Holmium laser

This laser penetrates the tissue as deep as CO2 analogs. Its’ main advantage is the ability to pass through quartz optical fibers. That is why it’s used to deliver the treatments to the surgery site.

Erbium laser

As its’ penetration depth is no more than 50 mcm and the absorption is 5-10 times higher than that of a CO2 laser, it has exclusively superficial impact. It is actively used for:

  • vaporization of cornea surface (when treating farsightedness);
  • skin perforation in order to draw blood samples;
  • microdermabrasion;
  • vaporization of hard tissues of teeth.

Diode laser

A diode laser differs from other types in high efficiency, long operational life (more than 10,000 hours) and compact size. It is an ideal choice for cosmetology, ophthalmology and gynecology.
Its’ main disadvantage is that the use for laser surgery is limited, because of the continuous operation mode.
