Magnetic resonance imaging is one of the most informative diagnostic techniques. Its popularity is explained by the highest accuracy, comfort, and simplicity. This non-invasive procedure is absolutely painless and provides maximum useful information.
To obtain magnetic resonance imaging scan, an MRI scanner is used. The diagnosis quality, its correctness, and subsequent treatment efficiency depends on the device.

Where MRI Machines are Used?

The following are examples in which an MRI scanner would be used:

  • anomalies of the brain and spinal cord
  • tumors, cysts, and other anomalies in various parts of the body
  • breast cancer screening for women who face a high risk of breast cancer
  • injuries or abnormalities of the joints, such as the back and knee
  • certain types of heart problems
  • diseases of the liver and other abdominal organs
  • the evaluation of pelvic pain in women, with causes including fibroids and endometriosis
  • suspected uterine anomalies in women undergoing evaluation for infertility

Types of MRI Scanners

According to the design, MRI scanners are divided into two types:

  • open;
  • closed.

An open system does not have a strong magnetic field. It is also suitable for diagnosing sizable patients and for those who suffer from claustrophobia. This kind of equipment is good at examining superficially located organs and structures. However, closed systems are best suitable to examine small formations and localize pathologies. A closed machine generates a high-power magnetic field, resulting in a high-quality image and excellent detail. A closed MRI scanner resembles a tube in shape into which the patient to be examined is placed.

Important Specifications

The most important technical characteristics of such devices are:

  • Magnetic field strength
  • MRI Type
  • Gantry aperture
  • Type of magnet

Magnetic field strength is one of two ways that the intensity of a magnetic field can be expressed. Technically, a distinction is made between magnetic field strength H, measured in amperes per meter (A/m), and magnetic flux density B, measured in Newton-meters per ampere (Nm/A), also called teslas (T).
The gantry aperture is the opening through which the table with the patient moves for the examination. Typical diameters of the gantry range from 50 to 85 cm. The gantry aperture diameters between 70 and 85 cm are useful for biopsy procedures and obese patients. Larger gantry apertures allow for easier handling of the biopsy equipment.
The scanning field of view in which the CT data are acquired is smaller than the gantry aperture diameter.
Magnets used for MRI are of three types:

  • permanent,
  • Resistive,
  • superconductive.

Permanent MRI magnets use permanently magnetised iron like a large bar magnet that has been twisted into a C-shape where the two poles are close together and parallel. Resistive (air core) MRI magnets operate at room temperature using standard conductors such as copper in the shape of a solenoid or Helmholtz pair coil. Superconductive MRI magnets use a solenoid-shaped coil made of alloys such as niobium/titanium or niobium/tin surrounded by copper.

How Much Do MRI Machines Cost?

When looking for MRI systems, it is possible to get MRI systems within the price range of 30.000 to 500.000 USD . And it is the needs you have that will determine the type of MRI system you should acquire.
Unfortunately, there is no clear answer to the question – How much does an MRI machine cost? – as there are many factors influencing the price:

  • the year of manufacture (YOM),
  • field strength,
  • gradient strength,
  • slew rate,
  • channels.
