Senographe Pristina – General Electric’s new mammography system
Mammography is one of the most important techniques used to diagnose and screen breast diseases in women. X-ray radiation is at the heart of this type of examination. That is why diagnostic capabilities of the mammography system, with which the examination will be performed, are extremely important.
General Electric is undoubtedly one of the leaders in radiological equipment production. In the summer of 2017, the company introduced its consecutive novelty - Senographe Pristina, the innovative digital tomosynthesis system, which provides high diagnostic accuracy at low radiation exposure.
Breast tomosynthesis system review
The Senographe Pristina system is a three-dimensional (3D) digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) platform that provides excellent breast imaging without increased radiation exposure. Tomosynthesis (volumetric, three-dimensional mammary gland image) is based on ASIRDBT, a calcification artifact correction iterative reconstruction algorithm. It provides off-plane images that exceed the traditional Filtered Back Projection (FBP) algorithm. In addition, a specific cutting algorithm reflects calcification as if each lesion is located in its optimal plane, allowing doctors to easily read images.
Convenient for patients and technologists
Senographe Pristina has been developed taking technologist' suggestions into account and is notable for ensuring greater comfort for patients. The equipment features include:
- convenient design with easy patient positioning;
- more space above the breast support;
- X-ray tube head movement capability;
- rounded corners on the detector reduce the patient’s discomfort under the arms;
- comfortable armrests instead of simple handles will ensure pectoral muscles relaxation and breast tissue correct location;
- compression tool that will allow women to independently adjust the degree of breast compression.
The device is ready to use within a few minutes after the system starts up and does not require any complicated calibration. Switching the device between 2D mammography and DBT (digital breast tomosynthesis) modes is very convenient and can be done with a single click of the mouse. The possibility to select one of the six contrast levels in the 2D examination mode is equally important for quality diagnostics.
