A device for simultaneous EEG and fMRI during an MRI scan has been developed.

A new standalone and inexpensive device for EEG and fMRI data simultaneous wireless recording, conducted during an MRI scan, has been developed.

This device will allow doctors to monitor patient condition in a better way, recording diagnostic electrophysiological signals during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

A new visualization platform

The novelty product was created by researchers from the University of Purdue (West Lafayette, IN, USA), Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. The device was presented at the annual conference of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) in 2017.

This smart invention is a small device which looks like a coin in size, but it can independently start and stop recording useful diagnostic signals during MRI scans. Consequently, this recently developed device can function as a platform, combining all types of obtained images. It allows clinicians to record, stimulate, and recognize human organs during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) procedures, reduce health risks, and improve image results.

Safe patient condition monitoring

A new visualization platform

Carrying out a functional MRI is an important technique used to diagnose many diseases and the condition of the brain as a whole. fMRI is necessary to reveal and monitor Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, epilepsy, autism, and other medical conditions. However, fMRI procedures usually have to be combined with other examinations to be able to reveal changes in brain physiology. One of these examinations is an electroencephalography (EEG). The aforementioned new device will allow combining the data obtained during these examinations, and simultaneous performing medical imaging and recording, ensuring efficient and safe patient monitoring.

Nishant Babaria, a graduate research assistant at the University of Purdue, said, "MRI alone does not always provide enough information to clinicians. There is tremendous scientific and clinical value in using multiple technologies together on a single platform. We believe this device is the first of its kind. It’s wireless and directly powered and operated by the MRI. It is much more affordable than other commercial systems and provides much better quality in neural recording and stimulation during MRI imaging. The device has great potential to significantly improve the safety, efficacy, and precision of medical diagnostics for patients who suffer from epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, depression, and many more diseases".
