4K ENDOSCOPY WITH OLYMPUS VISERA 4K UHD – THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE

In the early 19th century, an ingenious young doctor, Philip Bozzini, devoted his time to developing his instrument, Lichtleiter or "Light Conductor", a primitive endoscope. Unfortunately, Bozzini died at an early age, and was not able to fully develop his device, but being so ahead of his time he even foresaw that such instruments could be used in many different applications. It’s thanks to the early innovators, and science for catching up to the creative ideas of the time that we now have such a diverse and powerful set of tools. Ranging from flexible to rigid, from nonsurgical and surgical, and now we have the chance to visualize internal organs in 4K.

A merger of knowledge and experience: Sony Olympus Medical Systems

Because Full HD endoscopes are already on the market, Sony and Olympus decided to team up to take the next logical step. They formed an alliance, Sony Olympus Medical Systems, to develop the best 4K endoscope out there. Their 4K surgical endoscopy system, the Visera 4K UHD (ultra-high definition), combines the collective mass of knowledge and experience of two tech giants, which means that their brainchild is feature-rich, sleek and has extremely high-quality images in a small package.

Where Visera 4K UHD can be used and why it’s amazing

The Visera platform includes:

1) 4K UHD camera head – razor sharp images with quick focus thanks to 4K technology and fiber optic transmission

2) ULTRA telescope – wide field of view, high contrast, low distortion

3) Visera 4K UHD camera control unit – multitude of image processing tools accessible on an easy-to-use touch panel

4) Xenon light source – 300 W, automatic light intensity

5) 4K LCD Monitors – your choice of 31” or 55” 4K (4096 × 2160 / 3840 × 2160) monitor

The Visera 4K UHD system is intended for laparoscopic and arthroscopic surgery. Compared to previous generations of Full HD endoscopes, this unit shows detail unlike any other. With the ability to zoom in and stay in focus without the blocky pixelation you get with standard models, means surgeons won’t have to squint at the monitor or miss anything during stressful situations. Increased color depth and resolution on a large monitor will also grant surgeons the ability to confidently manipulate tissues with laser precision and a level of anatomical detail that medical professionals have been dreaming of.

4K and beyond

For most applications, Full HD endoscopes are sufficient, but seeing how quickly 4K endoscopy has come to fruition, it’s clear that it’s the future. Soon we’ll have 4K flexible endoscopy systems, but obviously the price point will be a turn off for most clinics. If you’re interested in information on the efficacy of HD vs. SD endoscopes, there’s a great article that was released by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Here at BiMedis we’re keen on keeping an eye out for the latest trends in the global medical field and we definitely approve of the Olympus Visera 4K UHD surgical endoscopy system.
