GUIDE TO BUYING A DENTAL UNIT. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE

Sooner or later every dentist is faced with the challenge of selecting a dental unit. This task requires a lot of responsibility so that's why in this article we'll show and explain the key aspects of choosing a dental unit.

Before buying a dental unit a dentist needs to know what type of dental treatments he/she will be performing, and then choosing an appropriate model becomes easier.

It’s worth noting that each dental unit is divided into three elements: patient's chair, dentist's element and an assistant's element. Each element includes important dental instruments that vary in quality and configuration depending on the price of the unit.

Dentist element

The dentist's element is one of the main components of the dental unit and therefore requires special attention. Depending on the cost, it can have different types of instrument panels and capabilities

Delivery systems can be divided into three types: swinging hoses, hanging hoses and mobile.

Each of these options has its own advantages and disadvantages:

- In a swinging hoses configuration, after using an instrument, it automatically returns to its place. The problem with this type of delivery system is that the hose can be short, impeding a dentist's workflow.

- Hanging hoses can be inconvenient only in that tools aren't automatically returned to their slots.

- Mobile delivery systems are universal.

The bare minimum set of tools for dental treatments is the following: air/water syringe, output to a micromotor and turbine. Many manufacturers offer modular dental units, which means you can add onto the basic system, but obviously the price will correspond to the amount of customizations you have.

Assistant element

It’s divided into the water block and disposal system.

There are two types of dental suction systems: “wet” and “dry”. Wet systems work by the laws of hydrodynamics, while dry systems use an air compressor. When selecting one of these options you have to keep in mind the power consumption of each type of compressor. For example, a wet suction system tends to use more air which can affect the longevity of the compressor.

Dry suctions systems are more reliable.

Patient element

It consists of a chair that can have either a hydraulic or electromechanical drive depending on the price and class of chair. The latter is more popular and reliable.

Before you buy a dental unit it’s wise to acquaint yourself with the smallest details of the model you’re looking at because ease of use and reliability have a direct effect on the success of you career and your patients’ smiles.
